"Slipknot's Drum Throne Vacant: Jay Weinberg's Departure Sparks Speculation"

In an announcement made on Sunday, November 5, the divisive metal band Slipknot shared news of drummer Jay Weinberg’s departure. The statement, posted on the band’s social media channels, expressed gratitude for Weinberg’s ten years of dedication and contributions while hinting at Slipknot’s ongoing commitment to evolution in their music.

The official statement read: “We would like to thank Jay Weinberg for his dedication and passion over the past ten years. No one can ever replace Joey Jordison’s original sound, style, or energy, but Jay honored Joey’s parts and contributed to the last three albums, and we, the band, and the fans appreciate it. But as ever, SLIPKNOT is intent on evolving. The band has decided to make a creative decision and to part ways with Jay. We wish Jay all the best and are very excited for what the future holds.”

Weinberg’s final performance with Slipknot took place on Friday, November 3, at the Hell & Heaven festival in Toluca, Mexico, marking the end of an era for the drummer.

Jay Weinberg’s journey with Slipknot is a unique one. The now-33-year-old musician discovered the band when he was a pre-teen, thanks to his father, Max Weinberg, widely known as a member of Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band and the leader of the house band on Conan O’Brien’s talk show. Jay quickly became an avid fan of Slipknot, and in 2013, he was invited to Los Angeles to audition as a replacement for Joey Jordison, who had left the band.

For the first few months following the release of Slipknot’s 2014 album, “.5: The Gray Chapter,” the band kept the identities of their new drummer and bassist a secret. It was eventually revealed that Jay Weinberg had taken up the drumming duties, along with bassist Alessandro “Vman” Venturella. This revelation occurred when a disgruntled former drum tech for Slipknot posted a backstage call sheet on Instagram, exposing their identities.

Slipknot’s split with Joey Jordison was announced in December 2013, although the reasons were not disclosed. Jordison passed away unexpectedly in July 2021 at the age of 46, leaving behind a significant void in the world of heavy music.

In a 2016 interview with Music Radar, Jay Weinberg spoke about his respect for Joey Jordison’s legacy and how he approached his role in the band. He emphasized his commitment to delivering what Slipknot needed while maintaining his identity as a drummer.

Weinberg said, “Of course, the history of the band feeds into what I think of the band, but when it came time to come up with new material, new songs, I didn’t think about Joey Jordison one bit…I didn’t want to come in and try to be a copycat. That’s not interesting to me, that’s not interesting to the band, and it would be insulting to everyone involved, including the fans.”

Reflecting on his journey with Slipknot in a May 2023 interview with Danny Wimmer Presents’s “Power Hour,” Jay Weinberg described the unforgettable experience of his first concert with the band in October 2014 at Knotfest in San Bernardino, California. He expressed how nothing could have prepared him for the intensity and excitement of that moment.

Before joining Slipknot, Jay Weinberg was a member of the punk rock band Against Me! from November 2010 to December 2012. His versatile drumming skills also led him to fill in for Kvelertak’s drummer, Kjetil Gjermundrod, during a North American tour in May 2013.

In recent developments, Slipknot announced the addition of a new keyboardist following the departure of longtime member Craig Jones. The band’s first performance with the new member took place on June 7 at the Nova Rock festival in Austria, although no official reason was given for Jones’s departure.

As Slipknot and Jay Weinberg part ways, the internet lights up as fans argue and speculate as to what the future holds for both parties.
